Background


This case study is a website in the travel and tourism niche that focuses on guided tours.


This client already had its content team in place, so we solely focused on building authentic backlinks.


In March 2017, they purchased some guest posts through us and saw incredible growth, then joined our full-service monthly SEO package in May 2018.


When they started buying SEO deliverables through us, the estimated organic traffic was about 1,700 visitors per month, but now it's at 10,000+ per month!


Here's how we did it:


The Initial SEO Audit


When we begin working with a new client on their SEO, we first audit the current website.


We look at the current traffic, backlink profile, anchor text diversification, and more factors.


We found no pre-existing penalties on the website, and it was off to a strong start, thanks to their in-house content-creating team and consistency in producing and publishing content.


Before they joined our monthly SEO service, they were already doing link building on an a-la-carte basis with 5-15 DA30+ guest post links per month.


That's a good amount of links!


With that said, we saw they were concentrating on using exact-match anchor text. To protect this website from any potential penalties, we wanted to ensure we had anchor text diversity when building the campaign. Over-optimizing can be a problem if you over-optimize your anchor text, so we noted that.


Keyword Research - "Easy Wins"


We always look for keywords with which we can get quick wins on. When we did the initial analysis, we discovered 926 easy wins keyword ranking in position 4-30 that we could move up in the rankings pretty quickly.


This finding was great news; many of their pages had great ranking potential. We worked with the client to choose high-volume targets and used this to identify LSI keywords we could use as anchor text while building links.


Keyword Research - Competitive Gap Analysis


We'll run a competitive gap analysis designed to help us find keywords that your competition is ranking for that you currently are not. These are often referred to as your hidden goldmines.


We found 92 keywords they were not targeting, yet their competitors were targeting them.


We usually use this as a basis for creating new content; however, since they already had their in-house content creation team, we shared this information with them so they could make it.


The SEO Campaign & Execution


As we mentioned, they already purchased high-quality backlinks from us, which built an excellent foundation.

It's important to mention that we used natural, benign, and "easy wins" LSI-type keywords as anchor text to keep ideal diversity.
